Negotiating With Debt Collectors

Credit Card Debt Negotiations Can Stop Harassing Debt Collectors

Negotiating with debt collectors can offer a good debt negotiation and settlement opportunity, and a way to put a stop to debt collector harassment. Imagine, no more annoying phone calls and intimidating debt collection letters.

If you simply cannot pay the full amount of your debt, explain why and provide proof of your financial situation. Offer an alternative method of payment such as a series of lower monthly payments. As long as "some" amount is paid each month it indicates that you are serious about honoring your commitment.

As well, debt collectors are sometimes able to accept a payment that is significantly less than the total amount asked for. Of course, they will attempt to obtain the full amount of the debt since they get paid a percentage of whatever they collect. But, if you are resolute and can provide a reasonable argument, there is always chance that they will accept less than the original amount. After all, 60% of $5,000 is better than 100% of $0. Legal debt negotiation is a way to lower debt.

As part of the repayment agreement, you should ask the debt collection agency not to place any additional black marks onto your credit history. You should further insist that they quickly and accurately report any payments and adjust any amounts owed so that your credit report appears up-to-date.

However, be sure to get any agreement in writing before you send a significant payment. It's okay to send a token payment to indicate the sincerity of your commitment, but don't send too much at once. If you agree to send too much when negotiating with debt collectors, you might undermine your request for a repayment plan or reduction.

Exercising patience, being real, and staying calm when dealing with debt collectors will not only help your cause, but will make a bad situation much less stressful.
