Money Saving Tips

Free, Practical Tips On Saving Money

You need practical money saving tips in these difficult financial times. Let's consider some free tips on saving money, so you can add more money to your pocket and save your hard-earned dollars.

We're bombarded on all sides by clever advertisers trying to separate us from our hard-earned money. They're doing their level best to get us to spend more. And we need to be extra careful with our spending as the cost of an item is often greater than its price tag.

The great American statesman Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) became known the world over for his thriftiness. In his 1737 edition of "Poor Richard's Almanack" he offered this timeless advice:

He that sells upon Credit, asks a Price for what he sells, equivalent to the Principal and Interest of his Money for the Time he is like to be kept out of it: therefore, He that buys upon Credit, pays Interest for what he buys.

And he that pays ready Money, might let that Money out to Use: so that He that possesses any Thing he has bought, pays Interest for the Use of it.

Consider then, when you are tempted to buy any unnecessary Housholdstuff, or any superfluous thing, whether you will be willing to pay Interest, and Interest upon Interest for it as long as you live; and more if it grows worse by using.

-- Ben Franklin

Please read Franklin's sobering words again.

They are wise words, and if properly understood and taken to heart, they'll cause us to think twice before making any purchase.

Why Money Saving Tips Are So Important

In a nutshell, Franklin is saying that there's a hidden cost to everything we buy. If we make a "credit" purchase, we are paying interest to the lender; if we make a "cash" purchase, we are losing interest on money that could have been invested.

Either way, spending money always costs us in the long term. That's why knowing how to save money is so important; thrift reduces our spending costs and saves us money in the long run.

The Art of getting Riches consists very much in THRIFT. All Men [and all Women] are not equally qualified for getting Money, but it is in the Power of every one alike to practise this Virtue.

-- Ben Franklin
