Tips For Saving Money On Groceries
Money saving grocery shopping requires insight and simply making practical choices. I can recall seeing a story on one of the consumer TV shows comparing premium brand groceries to store brand products. The reporter selected a family who only used well-known premium brand groceries to participate in an experiment. The family members were asked to unknowingly substitute a dozen items normally bought at the grocery store with store brand products.
To conduct the experiment, the reporter's staff cleverly switched the ingredients of the premium brand products with the store brand ingredients. For instance, the bag of cereal from the box of a premium brand of corn flakes was replaced with the contents from the store brand box.
A week later, the family was interviewed, and it was discovered they had no idea which brands had been switched. The kids didn't even notice that their favorite snack products were also not their favorite brands. The result was that this family saved almost twenty percent on their grocery bill for the week.
The main reason why premium, brand name products are so expensive is you're not only paying for the product itself, but you're also paying for the fancy packaging, advertising, and marketing costs. Things that have very little to do with the actual contents of the package. Sometimes, the package contents might even be manufactured at the same food processing plant for both the premium and non-premium brands.
So, if you're into saving money on groceries, the first step is to start buying store brand products in plainer packaging. Avoid buying the more expensive brand name products with their increased marketing costs.
Money Saving Grocery Shopping TipsThere's an old saying, "Never go shopping on an empty stomach." It's true. Not only do we tend to buy more items when we're hungry, but we are temped to purchase items to snack on while we're shopping as well.
Use food coupons. Saving money with grocery coupons is easy, and it just makes good sense. Clip money saving coupons from magazines or the weekend papers, or print them from online coupon sites.
Use store circulars. The best way is to study the grocery flyers that arrive at your door before you go shopping. However, if your favorite food store doesn't send flyers, you can always pick them up when you get to the store and take a few minutes to study them.
Avoid buying the expensive pre-made meals. Instead, prepare money saving meals by purchasing the ingredients and making your own meals in advance and storing them in the freezer. Homemade meals are better for you too.
Buy sale items in bulk. Look for sales and special offers and buy in quantity to stock your home pantry. For instance, if bar soap is on sale at a low price, purchase a half dozen, and stock them in your pantry for future use.
The bottom line: Money saving grocery shopping can save most families $1000 and more each year.
